I'm Inès Vermeir, a 25-year-old Happy Rebel from NOWJOBS, and I'm ready to take on a challenge that goes beyond the ordinary. I am selected for an incredible opportunity alongside 19 other passionate individuals: a nine-day journey to Malawi, Africa, organized by House of HR in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Together, we'll be transforming communities by building houses and creating homes for a local community in Kabadula,Malawi, Africa. Our mission in Kabadula is clear: to lend a helping hand and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.
I'm ready to challenge myself, make memories, and create positive change because, at House of HR, we're not just happy rebels, we're happy rebels with a cause!
I've opted for this song due to its thematic resonance with the project and its captivating rhythm. The introduction of "Homeless" draws inspiration from a traditional song sung by the Zulus at weddings, with its lyrics creatively rewritten to align more closely with the theme of homelessness.
I resonate deeply with the artist's sentiment, and I've chosen this song for its profound theme and infectious rhythm. As the artist beautifully expresses - "In Sesotho, ‘hlokomela’ means ‘take care’. But it also means ‘take care of others’. There’s a Sesotho saying about animals coming together to drink from the same well without fear of being attacked or hunted by other animals that are also there to drink. I love those special moments where there’s a truce in humanity and an understanding of what it is to be in need of water, to be in need of human rights, and the importance of taking care of one another."
This is Beyonce's love letter to Africa. She described the song as "I wanted it to be authentic about what is beautiful about the music in Africa." When daydreaming about African skies, this song came to mind. It's a catchy song, a fabulous artist and a fantastic movie. The theme of the film The Lion King's is about taking life by the horns and not being afraid of what's to come, which is applicable on many level for this journey.
A catchy rhythm intertwined with inspiring lyrics sets the tone of this anthem. This song celebrates diversity and inclusivity. The lyrics encourage people of all races, backgrounds, and identities to come together and unite under a common banner of hope and freedom. It is an invitation to dream big and work towards a better future for all.
This song has been a favorite of mine for a long time. The song is a remix of the original "Madan" by Salif Keita, which is sung in the Malian language, Bambara. The lyrics of the song are quite simple but carry a deep message. The lines "Ay ihe geba geta singurna yeah" and "Ilina ina nara sa" roughly translate to "The world is a big place, and we all come from different backgrounds." This is a beautiful sentiment, as the song seeks to unite people regardless of where they come from.
With a creatively collaborative approach, I have thoughtfully curated this playlist with a dual purpose. Primarily, I endeavored to incorporate the spirited essence of Africa, drawing upon its cultural richness. Secondly, I sought to include songs imbued with profound meaning, establishing a thematic resonance with the overarching objectives of this project.

The Zuunse Karpers, my underwater hockey club, is organizing a 3v3 tournament for Malawi. I hear you thinking, what is underwater hockey? Imagine playing hockey, but instead of skating on the ice, we're swimming underwater. We wear snorkels and fins to help us breathe and swim faster. Instead of a big puck, we use a smaller one that we push along the bottom of the pool with little sticks. Our goal is to get the puck into the other team's goal just like in regular hockey, but we have to do it all while holding our breath and swimming underwater!
The result is 722€. Thank you!
You can support this project by donating. Any amount, small or big, brings us one brick closer to building a home.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization that helps low-income people around the world access decent housing. House of HR is humanly resourceful by sending 20 Happy Rebels in May 2024 to Malawi to work with nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity, turning houses into homes for a local community. Because changing lives is in our DNA, we get involved in projects that feed off the energy of our Happy Rebels, who get a great deal out of giving back to society.
We will be helping the people out in Kabadula, Malawi, Africa, a village near Malawi's capital Lilongwe. Find out more about Habitat for Humanity's work in Malawi on: Habitat for Humanity
